Horizon Report 2011 – Mobiles and Electronic Books

by Walt on February 14, 2011

This week I found the New Media Consortium Horizon Report – 2011 (just released) –  http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/HR2011.pdf

As always, the Horizon Report brings up an important (and sometimes provocative) list of emerging technologies to watch that will “likely” have an impact on teaching and learning.  I won’t go into detail, rather take your own look at the entire report linked above.  However, I will share the two technologies that are on the “near-term horizon” – electronic books and mobiles.  We too have been watching these technologies in the CTL, trying to understand how they will impact academia, and providing information to faculty through workshops and discussion.

From my perspective, the impact of these two emerging technologies will be profound.  How we as educators respond will be telling – either we can can take advantage of the technologies and use them to improve teaching and learning or we can pretend that they will not change what we do.  I hope we will have some good discussions as colleagues read the Horizon Report – 2011 and reflect on the emerging technologies presented there.

In the meantime, the CTL is sponsoring a Teaching With Technology Workshop on the ePub format for electronic books (publications) on Thursday, February 24th at 2:00 pm in 35-510b. Please join us to explore some of the available ePub tools and the discussion of how these can improve what we do in academia.
