PolyLearn Course Example

by Tonia Malone on October 3, 2011

With the new Learning Management System (LMS) PolyLearn (Moodle 2.1), many faculty have asked about how to organize their course content within this new and different system. The goal of this blog post is to highlight one example of how Megan Howard used PolyLearn to support her student needs. Megan Howard (CSM-Biological Sciences) is teaching MCRO-224 – Microbiology lab in PolyLearn this Fall 2011.

To help with the PolyLearn layout and terminology, you may find these handouts helpful:

Megan asked how she could duplicate her Blackboard course layout  (Course Materials and Blackboard Folders) in PolyLearn. With the Topic outline (Edit Settings), the instructor can chose to organize the “content sections” as needed. The first “content section” on the top is for the course business (welcome information, syllabus, office hours, and support information) and the other content sections can be labeled to organize content by topics.

The course information, discussions, study guides, grading rubrics, handouts, and assignments are now listed in each “content section.” The grayed out items that you see in this image are items that Megan will make available to students later on in the quarter.

To edit the course, the instructor must “Turn editing on” (top right corner). Once editing is activated, the Welcome information on the top as well as each labeled section can be added by clicking on the “Edit” icon Edit Summary Icon , which will provide an HTML editor for the text, images, links, etc.

Megan’s course is just one example of how PolyLearn’s tools can be used to support your teaching and learning needs. Please stay tuned for other PolyLearn examples.
